Ingredients for Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterized by an overproduction of skin oil (sebum, produced by enlarged sebaceous glands). The sebaceous glands are connected to the hair follicles, which is why acne (which manifests itself in the form of follicular flare-ups) always finds its way to people with oily skin. Men are more likely to have oily skin because they have higher levels of testosterone.
While you may think excess sebum is greasy, it's actually important for skin function. With sebum, the skin is able to produce fat-soluble antioxidant components that form a protective wall against invasion by unhelpful microorganisms. Another misconception about oily skin is that people with oily skin do not need to use moisturizers. It is true that sebum indirectly retains moisture in the stratum corneum, but '"sebum production'' and ''skin moisturization'' are two separate processes. It is the lipid barrier that prevents the evaporation of moisture from the skin, but it has nothing to do with the oil secreted from the sebaceous glands (next to the hair follicles). So, more oil being excreted by the skin doesn't have much effect on the ability of the stratum corneum to keep moisture in the skin. Long story short, oily skin also needs to be kept hydrated.
Excess sebum makes it prone to acne, blackheads, enlarged pores, and in the afternoon the skin becomes oily, making it especially tempting to wash your face over and over again .
